雅思口語新題-International news
00:0002:26During this long-standing era of pandemic, which has been ongoing since last year, it is hard to turn on any news channel or check social media without hearing updates about government policies, vaccine progress, or new case announcements. I found the government policies on COVID 19 from the US particularly interesting, because it has been flip-flopping since last year. As far as I remember, at the beginning of last year when the pandemic just started in the US, restrictions on international travel werent terribly strict. People from foreign countries, including Ireland and UK, were allowed to travel into the US. It caused chaos at the airports at that time because a lot of Americans scrambled to get back to the US, and my guess is that it also aggravated the pandemic within the US because the international travel could bring in foreign cases. Approaching the end of last year, especially when the COVID-19 virus variants were found in UK, the travel ban on international flights was strengthenedthe UK was added to the sweeping restrictions on travel from overseas, a measure aimed at curbing the spread of virus variants.
Just in January of this year, when I tuned in to international news channel on my iPhone, I heard then President Donald Trump issued a proclamation rescinding the international travel restrictions for people who have travelled to Brazil, UK and other European countries. Only an hour later, the incoming Biden administration reinstated the same restriction and said it wouldnt lift an entry ban on most visitors from those countries.
I understand this pandemic is all new to us and no countries have much prior experience in handling this situation. Before humans can find any effective cures or vaccines, having a sustained and strict travel restriction is a key measure to curb the spread. People may easily feel relieved once they see some signs of hope and subsequently relax their measures, but I personally think we should not underestimate the battle in front of us. On the other hand, it is funny to see two administrations have very different views on the priorities of the country as well as how to handle the pandemic.
