1.Are there many vegetarians in China?

Historically, vegetarianism has been common in China for over two thousand years. figures such as Cao Cao and the Emperor Wu were vegetarian. Vegetarianism is often taken up for religious reasons, and it is common amongst people who practice Buddhism. In modern China however vegetarianism is not mainstream, and it can be difficult to find dishes that do not contain meat. Although vegetables are considered healthy, they are also seen as lacking fortifying properties, and people think that if you don’t eat meat then you will become weak. You can find vegetarian restaurants in many big cities in China but it can be hard to find them in more rural areas where people’s views are less modern.

2.Do you think advertising has an effect on what foods people eat?

Without a doubt, advertising can have a big impact on what people eat. If you’re watching television and feeling hungry, and an advert comes on telling you that this particular food is delicious, then naturally you’re going to want to eat it. This is especially true for children, who are more easily persuaded by advertising. It’s unfortunate that most food advertising is for snacks and junk food because these are generally unhealthy. You don’t see many adverts for fruit or veggies.

3.Do you think that junk food should be banned?

Although junk-food is unhealthy and contributes to many health-problems, banning it entirely would be a huge overreaction. It would be a knee jerk response to the problem. It’s unfair to stop people eating junk-food entirely. Many people enjoy eating junk-food in moderation, maybe once every couple of weeks, so it does not affect their health too much. It’s not right to stop them eating a food they like. Banning junk-food entirely is too harsh by far. If people get fat because they eat too much junk-food then that’s their own fault. They don’t have to eat it. We should trust people to make their own choices.

1.Do you think you could be a teacher?

I don’t think I am suitable to be a teacher, I am not a patient man and cannot bear to repeat the same things frequently. Teachers’ job is really boring to me, you have to make your explanations as easy as possible for students to fully understand. It is a challenging job, I am afraid I cannot do it.

2. Do you have a favourite teacher?

Um… Yeah, I suppose I do, but it’s actually kind of hard to pick out a favourite because I’ve been really lucky with all my teachers. You know, they’ve been really great, at least most of them anyway, but I guess my favourite teacher would have to be my Chinese language teacher, because she was incredible. I mean, the amount of effort she put into her teaching, and her attention to detail, were just amazing. And not only that, but she also showed a genuine care for all of us, which left a really deep impression on me. So yeah, out of all my teachers, I’d say she was probably my favourite.

3.What are the qualities of a good teacher?

I should say a good teacher is one who always is well prepared for the class. And I guess if the person has a good sense of humour that would help because, you know, boring, ah, session, nobody would sit in the class, you know, hours after hours.

4.Should teachers use discipline in the classroom?

Coming from where I, um, am, I think yes, teachers should discipline students. In Korea, students would respect the teachers. My mum’s generation was more so, and my mum had to say one day, she thought teachers don’t eat, don’t go to the toilet, they are demi-Gods and wouldn’t even step on the shadow of the teacher, because you respect the teacher so much. But I don’t think same kind of respect is here and students sometimes misbehave during class hours and I just find it hard to understand.

5.Do you want to be a teacher someday?

Umm! not really. I have not given it that much thought. But among my many career plans, entering in the teaching profession is not the one that ever attracted me.

6. Why people choose to become teachers?

People mostly choose to be teachers because this is the profession which is praised across the world. People always pay proper respect to a teacher regardless of geographical location. Moreover, when the knowledge is spread among the students, the teachers receive an unimaginable pleasure.

7.What kind of person makes a good teacher?

Teaching is considered as the best profession in the world. The teachers help the students to grow. So, to be a good teacher, one needs to be sincere and punctual. Moreover, vast subject knowledge is also required or you cannot share knowledge with your students. Behaving gently with the students is also a standard to be a good teacher.

8.Do you like strict teachers?

Yeah I do. I have no problem with them at all, as long as they’re fair! Because I think, on the whole, they tend to set high standards, and so consequently, that makes us work harder and learn more. And the other good thing about strict teachers is that they keep students in line, which means that the class won’t be interrupted by slackers who just want to joke around and be a nuisance.

Describe a time you spend with your friend in your childhood

You should say:

Who is this friend

How did you know about each other

And explain why you describe this time

I am going to tell you about my first ‘best friend’ from childhood. I’ll explain how we met, how long we were friends, what we got up to and why I liked her so much, and I’ll try and explain our friendship so you can understand why we were so close.

I first met my friend Tracey when I went to junior school. We were sat next to each other in class, I don’t think we chose to do that particularly, we probably just sat where we were told to on our first day of the school year, but we got on straight away and were firm friends from the age of about 8 until we left school to go to senior school aged about eleven. We happened to go to different schools at that point, and sadly our friendship drifted apart, when we were younger though, we were inseparable.

Tracey and I had similar interests. We liked being outside, we liked horses (although neither of us went riding or had access to ponies back then), we enjoyed doing craft type activities (although she was really talented creating amazing pictures and artwork, whilst I just got stuck at the stage of colouring in!) My main memory is of us heading off together on our bikes for hours and hours at a time. She lived quite near a large park, so I used to cycle to her house, and then we’d go to the park together with a picnic lunch and spend all day playing games together. I’m embarrassed now to think how we galloped around pretending to be horses or whatever the game of the day was, but it was fun at the time. We used to try hula hooping and skipping too, seeing who could hold up a hoop for the longest of skip without stopping using a rope. I have a feeling she was more accomplished than me at both these activities too. Sometimes we would try to find and catch grasshoppers (we always let them go) or we would just laze in the sun until it was time to go home. It was very different then. There were no mobile phones, and people were much more relaxed about letting their children go off and play all day, I’m not sure if you could still do that. Still, we were very happy and used to come back to her house tired and hot and sunburnt, and if we were lucky her mum would give us lemonade to drink and sometimes cheese salad rolls for tea. Happy memories indeed!

In terms of why we liked each other, well we just did! We enjoyed doing the same things, we could talk about anything to each other – complaining about school work or annoying parents and other such troublesome worries of the time. She had pet rabbits, and I had pet guinea pigs, so looking after our pets was a shared interest too. It probably helped that we lived quite close to each other and both had bikes too. We also both had a vivid imagination, it meant we could have remarkable adventures together pretending to inhabit whole new worlds that we had invented for ourselves.

We kept in touch for a while, but both eventually moved on. I think she went on to become an artist of some renown, which was not surprising given her early talent for art. Whatever she does and wherever she ended up I hope she is happy and successful too, and I will always remember her as a brilliant companion from when I was young, I wonder if she remembers me too.

Describe a magazine you enjoying watching

You should say:

What it is

How often do you watch it

What do you learn from it

Why do you like it

Let me tell you about my favourite magazine which is called the Science Fiction World and it comes out on a monthly basis. It is definitely the most famous magazine in this field in China, and loads of young students and adults subscribe to it. It is very cheap, only costs 6 yuan.

I guess it’s a professional science fiction magazine that began publishing in 1979 and showcases some of the best works in this field, such as Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, and also fosters a number of domestic authors like Liu Cixin and Wang Jinkang. I believe the Science Fiction World represents where the Chinese science fiction novels are going in the future.

I’ve read this magazine for about 15 years since the middle school age. I believe that reading science fiction novels can help inspire my imagination and creativity and think about some ultimate philosophic questions about the universe, what our society would be like in many years, and what form our human being will develop into. Besides, reading appealing novels enables me to enjoy the leisure time in an elegant way.
