Describe an experience that you taught a friend or a relative

You should say:

Who you taught

When you taught

What you taught

And explain how you felt about the teaching

P2

Well, since I went to the college, it is very common for me to help other people with subjects like math or English. But today I’m not going to talk about these experiences but a rather special one, that is, cooking. Last month I invited a few of friends to come to my home. I cooked a few dishes and they praised highly of them. One of my friends, Emily expressed special interest in braised pork chops and she wanted to learn from me. I was very happy to teach her, so we had a deal that on the next weekend she would come again. When that day came, before we started, I first asked her to take notes of the names of all sauces we were going to use, like vinegar, cooking vine and soybean sauce etc. All these are necessities in cooking the braised pork chops. After cleaning the pork, I demonstrated how to fry the pork, when to add the sauces and how to control the gas. Emily took a video and recorded down the whole process.

I was very happy to teach my friend how to cook. Actually I learned how to cook braised pork chops from my mother. Sometimes the food we eat convey some precious memory. My friend said she would think of me whenever she cooked this dish at home. I felt honored to hear that.

1. Are there many people living near you?

If yes:

Yeah there are, because I live in quite a residential area, and so most of the buildings around my home are apartment blocks.

If no:

No, I wouldn’t say there are, because I mean, a lot of the flats where I live are empty, which is probably due to the fact that most of the people who bought them didn’t actually plan on moving in, but instead bought them simply as an investment. So yeah, it’s a pretty quiet neighbourhood.

2. Do you know all your neighbours?

Answer A:

Well, I wouldn’t say I know all them, but I know a fair few, and that’s mainly because I spend quite a lot of time in gardens of my apartment complex, which is how I got to know them.

Answer B:

No not really, because my neighbours tend to keep (pretty much) to themselves. You know, I mean, if I happen to see them, we might say hi to each other, but that’s about it, and then they’ll just continue with doing whatever it is they’re doing.

3. When do you see your neighbours?

I guess the time when I mostly see them is when I’m in the lift of my apartment block. You know, that’s pretty much the only time I come into contact with them, because I don’t really know them all that well, so I’ve neverbeen round to any of their homes or anything like that.

4. How often do you see your neighbours?

Well I guess it depends, because I mean, during term time, I don’t see them at all, cos I’m away at university,. but during the holidays, when I’m back home, I guess I probably see them about three or four times a week, because I’m quite good friends with a few of them.

5. Do you think it’s important to know your neighbours?

If yes:

Yeah, I suppose it is, because I think it helps create a good community spirit if we know our neighbours. In other words, it kind of gives the neighbourhood a nice, friendly feel, instead of a cold, unwelcoming one, if you know what I mean!

If no:

No I wouldn’t really say it is, because for me I think friends and family are enough. And I mean, in my case I don’t spend nearly enough time with my family as it is, so I can’t really see the need to get to know my neighbours as well. And this probably goes for a lot of people, not just me.

1. Do you have a favourite teacher?

Um… Yeah, I suppose I do, but it’s actually kind of hard to pick out a favourite because I’ve been really lucky with all my teachers. You know, they’ve been really great, at least most of them anyway, but I guess my favourite teacher would have to be my Chinese language teacher, because she was incredible. I mean, the amount of effort she put into her teaching, and her attention to detail, were just amazing. And not only that, but she also showed a genuine care for all of us, which left a really deep impression on me. So yeah, out of all my teachers, I’d say she was probably my favourite.

2. What kinds of teachers do you like?

I guess…. um…first of all, teachers who are passionate about their subject, because you know, if they show enthusiasm for what they’re teaching, I’m much more likely to get interested in that subject and do well in it. And as well as this, I also like teachers that are supportive and…what’s the word….approachable. So in other words, teachers that show patience and understanding, and are there for you if you need help.

3. What are the qualities of a good teacher?

Um…. I guess the best way to answer this would be to think of some of the good teachers I’ve had at school and university. So please hang on just a second while I have a quick think about it…..! Ok, well the good teachers I’ve had have shown a genuine care for their students. You know, they genuinely want their students to learn and develop. It’s not just simply a job to them. So yeah I think that’s the most important thing – taking their job seriously and really caring about their students’ development.

Do you ever use a map?

Yeah I do. I mean, I often use a GPS when I’m driving somewhere that I’m not familiar with, and I find it super helpful, because I don’t have a very good sense of direction!

When do you use a map?

Let me have a little think… umm….when do I use a map….umm…. oh yeah, I guess the time when I most often use a map is when I’m on holiday somewhere, because I find it helps give me a better understanding of the place, and also saves me from getting lost.

Who taught you to use a map?

I don’t actually think anyone taught me how to use a map, you know, I kind of just figured it out for myself. And I’ve never really had a problem understanding them because they tend to be pretty self-explanatory, (at least for me anyway).

Do you prefer to use electronic maps or those made of paper?

I’d say I generally prefer using electronic ones, because they basically have more functions. For example, if you’re not sure how to get somewhere, electronic maps will be able to actually highlight the best route to take, and (not just that, but they) also give you detailed timings for each part of the journey, which is something that paper maps can’t really do.
