學校歷史
澳大利亞公立高中的絕大部分都是在澳大利亞聯邦政府成立以后即1901年以后建校的，而私立高中有很大一部分是在聯邦政府成立之前即1901年之前建校的。以墨爾本地區(qū)升學成績排名前100的高中為例，建校時間在1901年之前的高中共有32所，這其中公立高中只占1所，私立高中占31所。
因此，私立中學的歷史一般比公立中學更加悠久。
寄宿與走讀
在招收國際學生的公立高中當中，幾乎所有學校都是走讀學校。而在澳大利亞私立高中當中，寄宿和走讀學校的比例各占一半。但私立學校中的混校提供寄宿的相對較少，男校和女校提供寄宿的相對較多。

跟中國一樣，澳大利亞也劃分學區(qū)（SchoolZone）。澳大利亞公立高中代表的是大眾教育，因此每個學區(qū)基本上都會有數量不等的公立高中。澳大利亞私立高中代表的是精英教育，因此不是每個學區(qū)都有私立高中。從私立高中分布的地理位置特點來看，人均收入相對較高以及房屋均價相對較高的區(qū)域，私立高中的數量也相對較多。以墨爾本為例，被公認為墨爾本高尚區(qū)域的Kew區(qū)，共有6所升學率排名在前100的私立高中，在另外一個高尚區(qū)域Canterbury，共有4所升學率排名在前100的私立高中。

從學校數量來看，公立高中約占澳大利亞所有高中總數的三分之二，私立高中約占澳大利亞所有高中總數的三分之一。以澳大利亞維州墨爾本為例，共有高中565所，其中公立高中366所，私立高中199所。但從高中升大學的升學比例和成績排名來看，私立高中的平均升學比例和成績排名明顯高于公立高中，墨爾本地區(qū)升學成績排名前100的高中當中，公立高中占19所，私立高中占81所，在升學成績排名前50的高中當中，公立高中占7所，私立高中占43所。

澳大利亞公立高中的首要任務是為了滿足當地學生的入學需求，在此基礎上，若有空余的名額，就會招收國際學生，一般國際生的總數不超過學生總數的5%。私立高中招收國際學生的數量則有一定的差異性，歷史悠久且升學成績排名高的私立高中，對于當地學生而言也是一位難求，因此只把招收國際學生作為生源多元化的補充手段，國際學生比例一般會控制在3%左右甚至更低。
