The history of the story I am going to tell you about can be traced back to over 2000 years ago.Back then,a young man in a remote village heard that people in Handan walked in a very elegant way and decided to go there and learn.Once he arrived,he was fascinated by the pedestrians on the street and started imitating their moves immediately. He followed a middle-aged man for a while and then switched to a child, and then a senior citizen, and then a woman. However,a month later, his walking style deteriorated instead of being improved.
I first heard this story when I was a little kid. Before I went to bed,my mom would read me various fables, hoping that I could learn something useful from them. And after I got enrolled in primary school, this story also appeared in my textbook and the exam paper. So it is basically embedded in my blood and I am pretty sure I will still remember it when I turn into my 70s.
But for years,it was just another story I had heard and remembered, nothing special, until the last year of my high school. With the college entrance exam approaching,I was desperate to improve my academic performance. This article is from Laokaoya website. So I consulted the straight-A student in my class and asked him to share his learning habit and experience. Then,I did exactly what he told me.But when I found his method does not work a week later,I turned to another one,and then the third one,the fourth one.Suddenly,I realized that I was just like the young man trying to learn how to walk elegantly in Handan, and I would never succeed if I continued in this way.
Since then,I have developed a special feeling towards this story. It taught me such an important lesson with simple words, but I failed to grasp it for years.
