Should students take a gap year before attending college or university? The origination of the "gap year concept came in the decade following the Second World War when youth travel and cultural exchange was discussed amongst governments as a useful tool to create better intercultural understanding to prevent future global wars. These have been the two key elements in the gap year concept ever since:independent travel and volunteerism. Work travel appeared as a third key element with the introduction of student work visas in the 1980s.
On the positive side, a gap year enables students to realize their brave new dream through their own activities. In other words, it is a fantastic chance for any young adult to fight for his own life for a year. In addition, it helps students who face certain economic constraints back home to earn a little extra money that they can spend toward significant purchases. More importantly, throughout all these activities, one may discover out the true value of one's life and learn about oneself. After that, using his good judgment, he may step into the very way he should go for.
However, without parental guidance or school supervision, it is unimaginable to print the picture of their mass lives outside. Students may spend their year partying and eating junk food. The fact that these young people lack life experience means that the gap year will inevitably be filled with ups and downs. Even worse, some of these young people may not have enough stamina to endure all the tests they will face, failing in their very first trial in life. However, even in failure, people learn much about learning to live an independent life.
All in all, a gap year is a meaningful way for students to integrate life experience into a modern education. It is important to encourage these activities internationally, so long as students are provided effective and efficient supervision.
