Looking after historic places
How do people in your country feel about protecting historic buildings?
As far as I know, people in my country are pretty concerned about protecting those buildings. You know, they think the protection is helpful to record our history more lively and can be quite educational for the next generation. So, they basically are quite supportive of the protective measures carried out by their local government.
Do you think an area can benefit from having an interesting historic place locally? In what way?
Yes, I do. The first thing that comes to my mind is the economic development it might bring. You know, an interesting historic site in the city can attract lots of tourists from other places, which in the long run, can definitely contribute to the economy of the city.
What do you think will happen to historic places or buildings in the future? Why?
Well, I think there will be fewer historic sites in the future due to a lack of protection and even the destruction of those places for modern renewal. This article is from Laokaoya website. This usually happens in the city where the land is getting more and more precious. The government would consider tearing down some of them to build commercial buildings for the sake of economic development.
The teaching of history at school
How were you taught history when you were at school?
I remember our main learning method at school was reading the history textbooks which were handed out to us each semester. Besides, our history teacher would play some history documentaries in class bi-weekly to help us know more about the details of those big events like the Opium War and so forth.
Are there other ways people can learn about history, apart from at school? How?
Yes, there are. As the Internet and technological devices such as smartphones and computers have become quite common in our lives, it’s quite easy for us to know literally any piece of history in this world if we really want to do so. You know, we can simply put the keywords of that history in the search engines like Baidu and Google, and a lot of correlated information would pop out instantly.
Do you think history will be a school subject in the future? Why?
Yes, I think so. Even though technology enables us to learn history in our lives easier, the History subject won’t be delisted from the school curriculum. I think the main reason is that it teaches people to learn from the past, which is quite essential for every student who is about step into society for the greater good of mankind. You know, we can pay for not making progress, but we are hardly able to live with the consequences caused by the same mistakes humans made in history such as the second world war.
