利茲大學(xué)的前身是建立于1831年的利茲醫(yī)學(xué)院，以及建立于1874年的約克郡科學(xué)院。1887年這兩個學(xué)校與曼徹斯特歐文學(xué)院、利物浦大學(xué)學(xué)院合并為維多利亞聯(lián)合大學(xué)。1904年利茲大學(xué)獲得皇家許可而成為獨立的大學(xué)。經(jīng)過一個多世紀的發(fā)展，利茲大學(xué)成為了英國最負盛名的大學(xué)之一。利茲大學(xué)還是英國白玫瑰大學(xué)聯(lián)盟、N8大學(xué)聯(lián)盟、英聯(lián)邦大學(xué)聯(lián)盟、歐洲大學(xué)聯(lián)盟、紅磚大學(xué)和羅素大學(xué)集團成員。利茲大學(xué)位于英格蘭北部利茲市。大學(xué)的主體部分皆建于19世紀下半葉，當(dāng)時的目的是為了達成對當(dāng)?shù)乜茖W(xué)和技術(shù)發(fā)展的教育要求。1904年英王愛德華七世正式授予利茲大學(xué)大學(xué)的名號。
