阿默斯特學院（Amherst College）成立于1821年，位于美國馬薩諸塞州的一個小鎮(zhèn)里，是一所私立的文理學院。阿默斯特學院所在的小鎮(zhèn)叫Amherst，這個小鎮(zhèn)只有3.5萬人居住，離距波士頓90英里，距紐約150英里，到波士頓和紐約都只需兩到三個小時的車程。這樣的環(huán)境非常適合師生們潛心學術(shù)。阿默斯特學院在成立之初是一所貴族男子學院，直到1974年才開始招收女生。經(jīng)過了近兩個世紀的發(fā)展，阿默斯特學院現(xiàn)在已經(jīng)成為了美國最著名，實力最強的文理學院之一。
從學校人數(shù)上看，阿默斯特只能算是一所規(guī)模非常小的學院。但別看學校規(guī)模小，阿默斯特學院卻是美國最富有的高校之一，光是每年1.8萬余名校友向?qū)W院捐贈的總資金能夠高達9億美元。這些資金極大的保證了學院的正常運行以及教學質(zhì)量。學校資金充足的好處之一就是在錄取學生的過程中完全不會考慮學生的家庭經(jīng)濟情況能否負擔學院高昂的學費。只要學生拿到offer并注冊入學，學校就會根據(jù)學生的經(jīng)濟狀況給予適當?shù)呢斦?，比如減免學費、給予助學金、助學貸款以及提供校內(nèi)打工機會等，進最大努力減輕學生們的經(jīng)濟負擔。阿默斯特學院有55%的全日制學生都得到了不同程度的經(jīng)濟援助，平均得到的助學金或者獎學金高達5萬美元。
